Pharmaceutical Market and Healthcare in Russia

The annual conference of the “Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Sector in Russia” was very successful. As always, the forum consisted of key representatives of the pharmaceutical industry who came together to discuss common problems, to obtain the latest information about the pharmaceutical market, to analyze successful experiences of competitors and partners and also to listen to presentations of recognized key professionals of the industry. In 2006, over 200 participants from 10 countries of the world came to the forum. AIPM was represented by the following prominent international companies: AstraZeneca, GlaxoSmithKline Export Ltd, Nycomed Russia-CIS, Hoffman la Roche, Gedeon Richter Ltd, Solvay Pharma, Ranbaxy, Janssen Pharmaceutica, Sandoz (Lek), Novartis Consumer Health, EGIS Pharmaceuticals, and Schering AG.
During the 3-day conference participants discussed the following issues:
- Pricing and Reimbursement Policies and their influence on the pharmaceutical market, with contributions from some of the leading pharmaceutical manufacturers, distributors and wholesalers;
- Strategies for Success in Marketing, Brand Promotion and Portfolio Management. A whole day entirely devoted to case studies, best practice and strategies for success in the management of pharmaceutical portfolios. Topics included: how to build an effective brand defense as well as brand promotion strategies; and how to optimize the sales force size throughout the product lifecycle and create an effective PR campaign.
- Alliance Management Case Study Session. In this session several questions were addressed. Why is corporate culture shifting towards alliance management? How can companies successfully identify opportunities, make technical and commercial assessments, sign agreements, and manage long-term relationships with Russian partners? This session provided expert guidance on creating perspective models for the management of alliance portfolios.
- Spotlight on Regional Strategies. The session presented a comparative analysis of regional market opportunities (Russia/CIS; Moscow, St. Petersburg/ other cities) and examined various strategies for optimizing promotional effectiveness across different geographical markets.
- Spotlight on the Reimbursement Drug Program offered participants an in-depth examination of the changing market structure under the DLO program, an analysis of the role of distributors and wholesalers in Reimbursement Drug Program and a discussion of new business models and emerging revenue opportunities

Sergei Boboshko, Executive Director of AIPM, in his introductory welcome characterized the main stages of development in the pharma market during the past year and called on authorities for a better dialog with the pharma industry. (Download)
Serge Scotto, Head of Representation of Astra Zeneca, addressed the issues of patents and data protection and gave his opinion on how to bring Russia’s intellectual property laws into line with Western practice. (Download).
Michael Crow, General Manager of GlaxoSmithKline Export Ltd has worked in the pharmaceutical industry of GlaxoSmith Kline Export Ltd. over the past 15 years. His presentation showed his view of the main obstacles to further development of the pharmaceutical market in Russia. (Download)
Paul Melling, Managing Partner of Baker & McKenzie concentrated on the questions of marketing in pharmaceuticals and legal developments. He analyzed in detail advertising pharmaceuticals in light of the new Law on Advertisement. (Download)

Igor Balabushkin, General Director of Solvay Pharama presented questions of managing alliances and examples of successful co-operation with both Russian and Western companies in regions. (Download)
Naira Adamian, Executive Director at Janssen Pharmaceutica shared her experience in pricing and reimbursement policies and its influence on the development of the Russian pharmaceutical market.
F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd is the number one company in oncology worldwide with great experience on the implementation of subsidized oncological programs. Milos Petrovic, Head of Roches’ Russian Representation presented an analysis of the work of his company with subsidized oncological programs in Europe and in Russia.
Nycomed Russia-CIS has a decade of experience in the markets of Russia and CIS. Jostein Davidsen, General Director of Nycomed Russia-CIS analyzed his company experience in the regional markets.

Anna Yarvits, Business Development and Market Intelligence Director for Nycomed Russia-CIS provided information about strategic cross-border alliances in the CIS pharmaceutical sector and common rules to construct a unique alliance. (Download)

Dionysios Bouzos, Head of Cluster Fast Emerging Market at Novartis Consumer Heal described geographic expansion in Russia and CIS as a key success factor, as well as key issues, challenges, and strategies to maximize growth.
Yury Sukhanov, Marketing Director of EGIS Pharmaceuticals, concentrated on Pharmaceutical brands, compliance and conditions for development of the pharmaceutical market. (Download).
